National Food Day: "Just Eat It" Food Waste Film Screening and Panel Discussion

Join Bountiful Brookline and the Brookline Public Schools Food Services Department at a public event to mark the fifth annual National Food Day. This day seeks to promote real food and to increase awareness of food issues and food access across America.

We will feature a screening of the film “ Just Eat It an entertaining, yet compelling exploration of food waste from field to landfill.

Following the film a panel of local experts representing different stages of food production, sales, procurement and recovery will discuss the impact of food waste on hunger, resources and the environment.

Panelists include:

Doug Rauch, Daily Table , Dorchester
Ashley Stanley, Lovin' Spoonfuls , Boston
Jim Solomon, The Fireplace , Brookline
Alden Caldwell, Director, Brookline Public Schools Food Service , Brookline
Nataka Crayton-Walker, Farmer, City Growers , Boston

Healthy snacks will be sold by Lincoln School students to raise funds for their new school garden.

Bountiful Brookline is a sponsored project of the Brookline Community Foundation. Donations to Bountiful Brookline should be made payable to: BCF/Bountiful Brookline.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
The event location is accessible by bike, bus, T and car.

If driving: There is limited parking at the school front entrance and on-street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. The main school parking lot is at the dead end of Hedge Road off of Route 9 East. If parking in the school lot, please enter through the back entrance and proceed to the front lobby for registration.

The closest T stop is Brookline Hills on the "D" Green line.

Will there be tickets available for purchase at the door on the 25th?
This event is expected to reach capacity before the 25th. However, if space is still available on the 25th, we will post a notice on our Facebook page to that effect. Additionally, we will accept cash or check donations at the event.

Food, Inc.: Where does your food come from?

Thank you to all of those that made it to Bountiful Brookline’s second Summer Film Series event! We would also like to thank Allandale Farm and Deborah's Kitchen for supplying delicious vegetables and dip for a healthy summer snack.
In case you missed it, Food, Inc. highlighted the necessity to change the way we think about the food we eat, and where it comes from. Although initially released in 2009 many of the issues it touches on, such as the mechanization plaguing the global food industry, are still present today. It is imperative that we keep in mind that even in an urban-edge town such as Brookline it is still possible to grow and buy locally. From now through October stop by the Brookline Farmer's Market Thursdays from 1:30 p.m. through dusk for fruits, vegetables, meats and more!

What's new with our Food?

The 2nd film in our Summer Film Series is the seminal food movie Food, Inc . Originally released in 2009, this film resonates today more then ever as many of the issues exposed in the film have become a greater threat to our national and global food systems. Food, Inc . exposed the highly mechanized side of the food industry and how many corporations put profit ahead of consumer and animal health, jeopardizing the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of food industry workers and our environment.
These issues and an increase in personal and public health awareness played a role in MacDonald's recent "to stop using antibiotics important to human medicine in chicken production for McDonald's USA by March 2017".  Although " the devil is in the details " , MacDonald's along with other large food suppliers and restaurants including Chipotle, Panera, Perdue and Tysons are taking steps to change their way of doing business. Unfortunately, Congress' passage of the ( TPP)  last week and the proposed Safe and Accurate Food Labeling of 2015 have the potential to derail state and local legislation that supports greater public access to safe, healthy food.
