A new community garden in Brookline

Construction is starting soon on a new community garden at Lawton Park - the first since gardening plots were established at Larz Anderson Park in the 1970's. Spearheaded by Elissa Yanover, a resident of north Brookline,  the project was inspired by the documentary film " Growing Cities " shown at Bountiful Brookline's 2015 summer film series.  Elissa's enthusiasm has been instrumental in creating this first neighborhood community garden in town. Grants from Brookline Community Foundation and New England Grassroots Environmental Fund coupled with funds from the Town of Brookline are helping to make this a reality.

A lottery in June, coordinated through the Brookline Recreation Department, selected twenty two participants out of a pool of almost fifty applicants! We hope this community garden, as a pilot project, will be the first of many neighborhood based community gardens around Brookline. You can say "do my homework for me" and walk in the garden in your free time.

2016 Summer Film Series: The Harvest/La Cosecha

Bountiful Brookline is excited to announce the first film in our 2016 Summer Film Series, The Harvest/La Cosecha . This compelling film profiles three American children who labor as migrant farm workers, sacrificing their own childhoods to help their families survive. Zulema, Perla and Victor travel from Texas' onion fields to Michigan's apple orchards all the way to Florida's tomato fields to follow the harvest and to feed America.
Please join us July 12th from 6-8 p.m. in the Brookline Interactive Group theater located on the third floor, 46 Tappan Street, Brookline, MA, 02445 (top floor of BHS' Unified Arts Building). Seasonal local food snacks will be provided. Discussion to follow the film.

Waste Not, Want Not: The Wasted Food Conversation

Too big, too small, too ripe, too much?? The conversation over wasted food is happening on a local and global scale, and what’s the result? Many wonderful ideas for continued work towards a food system where NO food is wasted.

The community dinner hosted by
Rifrullo Café this January showcased the strong will of the Brookline community to combat the issue of wasted food head on. By choosing with our forks we can decide how much is too much and that ugly food never means inedible food.

Rifrullo owner Colleen Suhanosky envisioned a meal made entirely of ingredients found around her kitchen – no need to purchase excess when with a little creativity you can make a meal out of almost anything. This includes the pre-meal olive and dried grape plate. Colleen used dried grapes found in her refrigerator, soaked them in vinegar and herbs, and created a dynamite food sensation. Visit our “

Ideas for combating the wasted food issue in the Brookline community include a central location
composting drop off site within the town; creating a wasted food cookbook for those adventurous enough to accept the challenge of using every piece of food they buy-leaving nothing wasted or wanted; an adult education class on wasted food cooking; and making sure town events include accessible composting bins.

Around the world citizens and lawmakers in Denmark and France are leading the way to preventing food waste! France has even gone so far as to ban supermarkets from throwing away or destroying unsold food, forcing them to donate it to charities and food banks. Check out these articles on

Eat, Drink and Be Merry!

Now that we have had a chance to digest Just Eat It and the thought-provoking discussion that followed at Bountiful Brookline's 2015 Food Day event, let us reflect on some highlights from the day as we move through the holiday season, a time notorious for celebrating food and bounty. Don't forget, preparing just enough rather than excess amounts of food for your guests this holiday season should not be embarrassing, it should be for what we aim!

It was great to have the Brookline High School Food Justice Committee's help, and their views of the day speak to the energy and passion of the Brookline community: "The overall effect was a unified feeling of Brookline combatting food waste issues together. We felt a sense of belonging, and were glad to connect with other groups in our community who are interested in the same ideas as ourselves". The energy of the attendees as they exited the event was palpable, and Lizzy Filine of the Food Justice Committee "felt that everyone leaving the room after the presentation had a new-found energy and passion for reversing food waste on a small scale. This was an event with impact, and I am proud to say I am part of a community which takes food issues so seriously".
